Melanie Nutter is an urban sustainability and smart cities consultant providing strategic planning, policy analysis and stakeholder engagement as well as issue and market research for cities, foundations and nonprofits.

For the past 3 years, Melanie has led Nutter Consulting. Previous and current clients include the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN), The JPB Foundation, The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Advanced Energy Economy. She’s working with a number of cities to develop their smart, sustainable and equitable city strategies include the City of Fremont, CA, the City of Milwaukee, WI and the City of Berkeley, CA.

During her tenure as Director of San Francisco’s Department of the Environment from 2010-2014, San Francisco achieved an 80% waste diversion rate, reduced its carbon emissions to 14.5% below 1990 levels and was named the Greenest City in North America. From 2005-2010, Nutter served as the Deputy District Director for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and prior to that she worked as a grassroots environmental organizer for Greenbelt Alliance, the Sierra Club and the PIRGs. Nutter founded and is Chair Emeritus for the Energy and Environment Circle for Full Circle Fund. She currently serves as a the Board Chair for Ecodistricts and is a member of the Urban Age Institute. Nutter holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Northwestern University in Communications and Environmental Studies and is a graduate of GreenCorps and Emerge CA.
