The Nature Conservancy is working in cities using a holistic, inclusive approach that prioritizes collaboration with partners and engages residents to develop community-driven conservation solutions, with a special focus in frontline communities. To support this vision, the Conservancy’s North America Cities Network has developed a small grants program that funds relationship-building projects with local organizations. Since 2015, the Network has awarded 37 grants to community partners in 17 cities to facilitate development of collaborative relationships outside of a traditional outcome-based granting model. Using the small grants approach, the Conservancy creates space to address power dynamics in institutional relationships, develop emergent solutions and learn honestly and openly from both successes and missteps.
