In the face of growing concerns about the impact of the built environment on the environment, the commercial real estate industry is facing increasing pressure to adopt and demonstrate better energy and sustainability practices. In the absence of other measurements, EPA Energy Star and USGBC LEED programs have gained considerable traction. Our interest was in understanding the supply of this new type of real estate—“green” buildings—in the market. To do this we developed the Green Building Adoption Index which shows the uptake of Energy Star and LEED certified space in the top 30 US markets over the past decade. New data will be revealed during this month’s webinar. The results are quite dramatic and taken together tell an interesting story about where and what type real estate is responding.
